Spot deepfakes with McAfee’s new AI detection tool

Developers are increasingly interested in harnessing the AI potential of the hardware NPUs found in Copilot+ PCs, and McAfee is no exception. The company is introducing a deepfake detector as a new addition to its AI-powered offerings.

The McAfee Deepfake Detector could be a useful tool in the fight against disinformation if it performs as promised. The service operates in the background, monitoring any video content you view. If the detector identifies AI-generated content, it will notify you with an alert, ensuring you’re aware of potential deepfakes.

This feature isn’t yet part of McAfee Total Protection, the company’s general antimalware solution. For now, it’s exclusive to Lenovo customers who purchase certain Lenovo PCs. Starting today, these customers can try the tool for free, with the option to subscribe for $9.99 per year if they wish to continue using it.

“At McAfee, we’re inspired by the transformative potential of AI and are committed to helping shape a future where AI is used for good,” said Roma Majumder, senior vice president of product at McAfee, in a statement. “Teaming up with Lenovo boosts our ability to deliver the most effective, automated, AI-powered deepfake detection, offering people a powerful digital guardian on their PCs. Together, we’re able to harness AI in new and revolutionary ways, empowering individuals with the most advanced deepfake detection so they can navigate the evolving online world safely and confidently.”

The Technology Behind McAfee’s Deepfake Detector

Interestingly, McAfee’s Deepfake Detector doesn’t analyze the visual elements of a video. Instead, it focuses on the audio, using AI to determine if the sound has been artificially generated. The analysis happens entirely on the local NPU, ensuring that no data is sent to the cloud and that user audio remains private. The audio detection feature can be easily toggled on or off.

Additionally, McAfee is launching a new Smart AI Hub to educate users about deepfakes. The hub encourages users to help combat disinformation by uploading URLs containing deepfake videos, contributing to the AI’s training process.

As we explore the best AI tools for PCs, including those for art and language models, McAfee’s deepfake detection service stands out as a promising addition. With the rise of digital misinformation, this tool could play a crucial role in ensuring the authenticity of the content we consume.
