The underlying issue lies in how companies utilize user data to improve their models. Platforms like ChatGPT rely on user interactions to refine their AI’s capabilities, a process explicitly outlined in OpenAI’s terms of service. Unless users proactively disable chat history logging, anything shared — whether it’s passwords, personal details, or uploaded files — can potentially be used for training. Even anonymized data isn’t entirely safe, as evidenced by a major data breach in 2023. Hackers exploited vulnerabilities in ChatGPT’s systems, exposing sensitive data from thousands of users.
Corporations, too, are taking notice of the risks. Samsung, for example, banned employees from using AI chatbots after a mishap involving sensitive source code being uploaded to ChatGPT. Other major firms, including JPMorgan and Citigroup, have since imposed similar restrictions to prevent unintentional data leaks.
On a larger scale, regulatory efforts are still in their infancy. While the U.S. Executive Order on AI development underscores the importance of privacy, its lack of actionable policies leaves users exposed. The absence of clear laws against using unconsented data for AI training further complicates the situation.
In the meantime, users must be vigilant about what they share with AI systems. Avoid treating these tools like trusted confidants, no matter how lifelike their interactions may seem.
