TP-Link Routers Under Scrutiny Amid National Security Concerns
The Wall Street Journal reports that US authorities are investigating potential security threats posed by TP-Link routers, which could lead to a ban on their sale and use.
The Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Justice are each conducting inquiries into TP-Link, a prominent router brand with significant market penetration. Estimates suggest that TP-Link routers are present in approximately 65% of US homes and small businesses, with their products even being used by critical government entities, including the Department of Defense.
Concerns about TP-Link stem from past security vulnerabilities and their role in cyberattacks. Notably, TP-Link routers were exploited in a recent attack targeting Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, allegedly orchestrated by hackers with links to the Chinese government.
A ban, if enacted, could come into effect next year. In a statement, TP-Link’s US distributor expressed a willingness to cooperate with authorities, saying, “We are eager to demonstrate that our security practices align with industry standards and to reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding US national security.”
