Microsoft to Keep Users Signed In by Default: What to Know
In a shift toward convenience, Microsoft is removing the “Stay signed in” prompt when users log into their accounts. Starting next month, users will remain signed in automatically until they choose to log out.
While this streamlines the experience for personal devices, it brings additional risks for those using shared computers. As noted by The Verge, users on public systems—such as in libraries or computer labs—must now be vigilant about logging out manually to protect their accounts. Alternatively, using private browsing mode can prevent your session from persisting once you close the browser.
For situations where you forget to log out, Microsoft provides a solution. By accessing the security dashboard from another device, you can use the “Sign out everywhere” option to disconnect your account from all logged-in devices. However, note that this feature will not sign you out of Xbox, so you may need to handle that separately.
This new policy emphasizes the importance of maintaining account security, particularly when using devices that aren’t your own.
