Whenever there’s a new urgent update for Chrome due to a zero-day exploit, I’m reminded of that classic Harry James tune, “I’ve Heard That Song Before.” It’s especially relevant today as Google has announced a crucial update to address a newly discovered security vulnerability.
Updating Chrome is a must right now.
BleepingComputer reports that this marks the ninth security patch issued by Google for Chrome this year. The latest update addresses CVE-2024-7971, a “type confusion” flaw within Google’s JavaScript engine. This vulnerability was originally discovered by Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center and Security Response Center last month, but details on its exploitation remain undisclosed.
Even though Microsoft and Google are competitors, they both benefit from maintaining Chrome’s security, given its dominance in the browser market and its connection to Microsoft’s Edge through the Chromium framework.
The current update not only fixes this critical issue but also includes seven high-priority patches and thirteen additional fixes of varying importance. Make sure your Chrome browser is updated to version 128.0.6613.84 on Windows and Linux or 128.0.6613.85 on Mac to stay protected.
