As important as code is, documentation of that code is arguably more important. No developer, and no software, exists in a vacuum; unless other developers can understand the code you’ve written, it loses much of its potential impact. But what about machines? Do they also need good docs? The answer is yes, and points to a future of “tiered documentation,” a term I first saw described by Vlad Ionescu. As he details, tiered documentation means “having one set of documentation for human users and having another set of documentation specifically for LLM training.” The former needs to be easily consumed…

As the momentous first year of ChatGPT comes to a close, it’s clear that generative AI (genAI) and large language models (LLMs) are exciting technologies. But are they ready for prime-time enterprise use? There are well-understood challenges with ChatGPT, where its responses have poor accuracy. Despite being based on sophisticated computer models of human knowledge like GPT-4, ChatGPT rarely wants to admit ignorance, a phenomenon referred to as AI hallucinations, and it often struggles with logical reasoning. Of course, this is because ChatGPT doesn’t reason—it operates like an advanced text auto-complete system. This can be hard for users to accept.…

AI Search WILL HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON GOOGLE AND BRANDS For many people, Google’s search engine serves as the front door to the internet. And search is big business for Google: More than half of its total revenue in 2022 ($162.45 billion) came from search ads. However, thanks to artificial intelligence, this formula may now be changing. Gradually, consumers are moving from a keyword-driven search experience where they are presented with a series of ads to click, to a conversational interaction using a search bot powered by a large language model. Such a turning point could have profound impacts…

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Microsoft’s stock market value crossed the $3 trillion milestone for the first time on Wednesday, retaining its place as the world’s second most valuable company, just behind iPhone maker Apple. Microsoft and Apple shares have been vying for the top spot as the most capitalized stock on Wall Street since the start of the year, with the iPhone maker briefly losing its crown to the X-box owner earlier in January. Shares of Microsoft hit a record high of $404.72, up 1.5%, and allowing the tech giant to briefly breach the $3 trillion market capitalization. Apple’s shares…

It’s been another brutal week for tech layoffs. In the past six days, numerous major tech companies have announced they are cutting jobs. The most recent is e-commerce juggernaut eBay, which has announced it will cut 9% of its workforce. Here’s the latest: Wayfair: Last Friday, digital home goods retailer Wayfair announced it would cut 13% of its global workforce. That’s around 1,650 employees. Part of those cuts will see Wayfair letting go 19% of its corporate team. The company said the cuts were not related to its most recent quarterly performance, but are intended to return the company to…

The perfect guacamole recipe should include ripe, mashed avocados. Spices such as fresh lime juice, coriander, red onion, salt and paprika are often added to the dish. But guacamole’s newest ingredient, courtesy of nonprofit marketing organization Avocados From Mexico (AFM), is a dash of artificial intelligence. With 250 million pounds of avocados set to be consumed, AFM introduced a multi-modal AI tool called GuacAImole that uses image recognition, text, and rendering. Create personalized guacamole recipes. GuacAImole can be used in three different ways. Users can upload a picture of the ingredients they have on hand or a completed meal. They…

When I realized that this newsletter would go out on January 24, I didn’t have to think any further about its topic. Forty years ago today, Steve Jobs formally introduced the Macintosh computer at Apple’s annual meeting. His presentation created the template for every memorable “Stevenote” product launch to come. Of course I was going to write about a milestone like that. As I probably don’t need to explain, that first Mac brought the graphical user interface and the pointing device known as a mouse to mainstream computer users, as long as they could pay the list price of $2,495,…

How good are you at giving gifts? According to a national survey commissioned by Etsy, 75% of Americans believe that being a good gift giver is important and shows someone how much they mean to you, but 64% think finding the perfect gift takes too much effort. Now the $8.4 billion market-cap e-commerce company is rolling out a new product called Gift Mode to make it much easier to narrow down the more than 100 million things offered for sale on its platform. It’s also a strategy to differentiate itself in a world where almost every platform, whether it’s e-commerce…

In a series of TikTok videos that went viral earlier this month, Patricia Milan, the user behind the Business Women’s University account, bragged about maxing out her credit cards and getting $150,000 in cash to buy an Airbnb unit. The plan, he explained to the audience, was to pay off his debt with the income from the rent. A second video gave advice on how to achieve high credit card limits by creating a series of circular transactions within their own company, which is actually illegal in many jurisdictions. Milan did not respond to a request for comment via its…
