For the past 20 years, the media’s working relationship with major tech platforms like Google, Facebook and Twitter has been a Faustian bargain. Tech giants gained access to the largest audience in human history (I’m not exaggerating), and in return the media industry gave up ultimate control of its own destiny. Big tech controlled the media’s understanding of analytics, KPIs and editorial value, while also mediating its relationships with both audiences and advertisers. This tense relationship may be completely abandoned in the coming years. In the 1970s, environmentalists gave us the “Three Rs” (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) as a guiding…

Social media company X’s platform has less antisemitic content compared with other applications, according to audits it has commissioned, X owner Elon Musk said on Monday at a conference on combating antisemitism. Musk visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau site of a former Nazi German concentration camp earlier in the day, before appearing at the conference in the southern Polish city of Krakow, which addressed the rise in antisemitism since the Israel-Hamas conflict started in October. Innovations often require significant behavioral changes, are a tough sell for most people, and often require a significant investment of time and training. Think solar panels or electric vehicles (EVs) or even the ubiquitous iPhone. None of these became widely adopted overnight, and only took off when they reached the inflection point…

In an Instagram video posted to her account last month, former Hype House member and influencer Tayler Holder sits on a stool wearing a T-shirt that reads “Jesus Loves You.” “A lot of you probably don’t know much about me,” he tells the off-screen audience. “You saw a small part of my life on screen and always knew me as the TikTok kid.” But the comments, as always, tell another story. “Suddenly your accent is showing,” wrote one user. “Wasn’t this dude trying to be a gangster like last year?” he added. Holder’s rebranding as a country singer has long…

Intel wants you to believe that its newest processors usher in a new era of personal computing. In the chipmaker’s words, this is the era of “AI Computing,” where specialized neural processors help run large language models, create works of art, and perform many other machine learning tasks. Intel believes that by powering on-device AI, we will see new applications that are either too costly or too privacy nightmare to run in the cloud. The company may be right, but it is not the first company to make this feature possible. Much of what Intel unveiled at this month’s CES…
