AWS to Cease New Customer Access for Several Cloud Services; Existing Users Can Continue as Usual

AWS Limits New Customer Access to Several Cloud Services, Existing Users to Continue as Usual

In a recent move, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that new customer access will be discontinued for several of its cloud services, including AWS Cloud9, AWS CodeCommit, Amazon S3 Select, Amazon S3 Glacier Select, Amazon CloudSearch, Amazon Forecast, and AWS Data Pipeline. This decision, effective immediately as of late July, impacts the onboarding of new customers to these services, although existing customers will continue to have access.

Jeff Barr, AWS Chief Evangelist, explained the decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the closure was a strategic choice aimed at aligning the company’s offerings with evolving customer needs. Barr assured users that while new customer access would be halted, there were no immediate plans to alter the features or reliability of the services for current users. AWS also pledged to maintain the security and performance of these services and support migrations to other solutions as necessary.

For those affected by the discontinuation, AWS has outlined alternative pathways. Users of AWS CodeCommit, which provides private Git repository services, are advised to migrate their repositories to other Git providers. Options for migration include cloning, mirroring, or moving specific branches to ensure continuity of service.

AWS Cloud9, the cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE), is another service affected by this decision. AWS recommends that Cloud9 users transition to other integrated development tools such as AWS IDE Toolkits and AWS CloudShell. These alternatives aim to provide similar functionality and integration with AWS resources, helping developers maintain streamlined workflows within their familiar development environments.

In addition, AWS has provided guidance for users of Amazon CloudSearch and Amazon Forecast. CloudSearch users can migrate to Amazon OpenSearch Service, which offers enhanced search and analytics capabilities. Similarly, Amazon Forecast users are encouraged to transition to Amazon SageMaker Canvas, a service designed for machine learning and predictive analytics that can replace Forecast’s functionality.

Overall, while new customer access to these services will no longer be available, AWS remains committed to supporting existing users through these transitions and continuing to deliver reliable service. The company encourages feedback from its user base as it adjusts its service offerings to better meet changing needs and preferences.
