In recent weeks, OpenAI introduced a ChatGPT desktop app for Windows, allowing users to use the AI assistant without a web browser. However, as this early app version is only available to paid subscribers, free-tier users are still without access to ChatGPT on the desktop.
For those on the free tier, there’s an option: using ChatGPT via the nightly version of Windows Terminal. Windows Terminal, a Microsoft-developed command-line tool, combines the simplicity of Command Prompt with the advanced features of PowerShell. While the regular Windows Terminal is available in the Microsoft Store, the nightly version — needed for ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot support — is only on GitHub.
To get started, visit the GitHub page, navigate to “Installing Windows Terminal Canary,” and select the best download option for your OS. The App Installer version supports auto-updates on Windows 11, while the Portable ZIP option works on Windows 10 and up but requires manual updates.
After setup, activate the “Terminal Chat” feature in the settings and enter an API key from OpenAI, GitHub, or Azure. Now, you’ll be able to use ChatGPT through Windows Terminal Canary, whether you’re seeking commands for PowerShell or sample code for a project — all without a paid subscription.
