Critical Microsoft Word Bug: How to Prevent File Deletion When Saving

Users of Microsoft Word have recently reported a serious problem where the software seems to delete files after saving, creating significant concern for those relying on the program for critical work. This is not the kind of bug that would typically be expected from a leading company like Microsoft. As of October 3, 2024, Microsoft has officially confirmed the existence of this issue, but a clear explanation or a permanent fix has not yet been provided. In the meantime, there are temporary solutions available for users who need to continue working in Word.

Update: Microsoft has implemented a fix for this bug, which has been fully rolled out to all Microsoft Word users via Microsoft 365. If you continue to encounter this issue, close all Microsoft Office applications and reopen Word to ensure that the update takes effect.

    Understanding the Delete-upon-Save Bug

According to Microsoft, this bug impacts Microsoft 365 version 2409 and occurs specifically with files that have file extensions in all capital letters. Additionally, if the document title includes a “#” character, this can also trigger the deletion. The issue arises when users close Word after editing a file that hasn’t been saved manually. When prompted to save an unsaved file upon closing, if users opt to save it, Word erroneously deletes the file instead of saving it.

To clarify, this issue is triggered only when users try to save a document through the “unsaved file” warning after they have not saved it manually beforehand.

    Workarounds to Recover Deleted Files

Fortunately, files affected by this bug are not lost permanently; they are moved to the Recycle Bin, providing a straightforward recovery path for users. To avoid the risk of accidental deletions, it is advisable for users to manually save their documents before closing Microsoft Word.

Another recommended workaround involves enabling a specific setting for added safety. Users can click on the File menu, select Options, then navigate to the Save tab, and check the box labeled “Don’t show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts.” This adjustment can help mitigate the risk of encountering the bug.

While Microsoft has yet to determine the precise cause of this issue, the company is committed to resolving it as quickly as possible to ensure a smoother user experience going forward.
