Four gigabytes of RAM might be standard for today’s PCs and smartphones, but for a compact board like the Raspberry Pi, it can be overkill. To address this, the Raspberry Pi Foundation is rolling out a new 2GB version of the Raspberry Pi 5. This updated model reduces the RAM from the previous 4GB base version and is priced at $50—$10 less than the 4GB variant and $30 cheaper than the 8GB version.
This new model also features a different Broadcom processor, the BCM2712D0. While it retains the same quad-core Cortex A76 processor running at 2.4GHz as the BCM2712C1 used in the higher-end models, the D0 variant excludes certain non-functional hardware components found in the more expensive versions. This change not only lowers the production cost but also reflects the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s efforts to manage the impact of increasing component prices on the cost of the Pi 5.
At a price point of $50, the 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 is a great option for those looking to experiment or use the board in smaller custom projects. You can find the new version in stock on PiShop.us and at other retailers soon.
