AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D Coming Soon — Don’t Forget Your BIOS Update
The wait for AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D is almost over, though an official release date hasn’t been confirmed yet. But there’s a sign that it’s getting close — MSI has already started pushing BIOS updates for its motherboards, ensuring that your upgrade will go smoothly when these gaming-focused processors arrive.
While BIOS updates are standard procedure for new chips, MSI is emphasizing it with a press release, specifically mentioning its MEG X870E GODLIKE motherboard. That said, any motherboard with an AM5 socket should technically work with the new processors without requiring a BIOS update.
This is important because I ran into a similar issue while assembling a PC for my brother-in-law during the holidays. Even though I used a motherboard model I had in my own rig and the Ryzen 9 7950X3D was an AM5-compatible chip, the system refused to boot without an updated BIOS. It’s a real pain if you’re away from home, especially if you don’t have access to spare PCs for troubleshooting.
For all of you eagerly awaiting these new CPUs, don’t forget to update your UEFI/BIOS before you install your new Ryzen chip. The Ryzen 9800X3D was already tough to find, and with the release of the upgraded 16-core and 12-core models, these chips are likely to sell out just as fast.
