ASP.NET Core’s minimal APIs, first introduced in ASP.NET Core 6, have been designed to simplify the creation of lightweight APIs by minimizing dependencies and boilerplate code. This approach is especially useful for developing fast and straightforward microservices. With the release of ASP.NET Core 8, several enhancements have been made to further streamline the development process and add new capabilities.
One of the notable updates in ASP.NET Core 8 is the expanded support for parameter binding directly from forms. This new feature allows developers to bind data from HTTP form submissions directly to API method parameters, reducing the need for manual data extraction and validation. This change enhances the efficiency of handling POST requests and simplifies the process of working with form data.
Another significant improvement is the inclusion of built-in support for antiforgery tokens. Antiforgery tokens are crucial for preventing Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks. ASP.NET Core 8 integrates this feature more seamlessly into the minimal API model, allowing developers to safeguard their applications against such vulnerabilities without additional configuration overhead.
Additionally, ASP.NET Core 8 introduces Native AOT (Ahead-Of-Time Compilation) support. Native AOT allows for the pre-compilation of applications into native machine code, which can improve startup performance and reduce memory usage. This feature is particularly beneficial for scenarios where application performance and deployment size are critical considerations.
To get started with these new features, you should have Visual Studio 2022 installed. If you don’t have it yet, you can download it from the official Microsoft website. Once you have Visual Studio 2022 set up, you can create a new ASP.NET Core Web API project by following these steps:
- Launch Visual Studio 2022 and select “Create new project” from the welcome screen.
- In the “Create new project” window, choose “ASP.NET Core Web API” from the available templates and click Next.
- In the “Configure your new project” window, enter a name and location for your project. You can also choose to place the solution and project in the same directory if you prefer. Click Next.
- In the “Additional Information” window, select “.NET 8.0 (Long Term Support)” as the target framework. Uncheck the “Use controllers” option since we will be utilizing minimal APIs. Ensure that “Enable Open API Support,” “Configure for HTTPS,” and “Enable Docker” are unchecked for this tutorial.
- Click Create to generate your new project.
With your project set up, you can start leveraging the new minimal API features to build efficient and modern web services. The enhancements introduced in ASP.NET Core 8 make it easier to handle common web application tasks and improve overall development efficiency.
