Microsoft Makes It Easier to Share Files Between Windows 11 and iPhones
Sharing files between an iPhone and a Windows 11 PC has never been the easiest task, but Microsoft is looking to change that with the latest update to its Phone Link app. This update, available to Windows Insider users, brings a much-needed improvement to the way files can be exchanged between Windows PCs and iPhones.
While it was already possible to share files via Bluetooth with Phone Link and its companion iOS app, Link to Windows, the Bluetooth transfer process was often slow and unreliable. This update changes that by enabling file sharing over your local network or carrier network, which significantly speeds up the process. Essentially, the experience now mirrors Apple’s AirDrop functionality, allowing users to quickly send any type of file to or from their iPhone and Windows 11 PC.
For those who use both devices regularly, this is a real game changer. Previously, many people, including myself, relied on cloud solutions like Google Drive or Dropbox or even services like AirDroid to manage their file transfers. However, these options weren’t always reliable, and sometimes it was faster to just email a file to yourself. With the new Windows 11 update, that frustration is greatly reduced, and file sharing becomes a seamless experience without needing a USB cable.
As much as this update is a promising step forward, it’s important to note that it only applies to iPhones and Windows 11 PCs, and functionality for tablets is still missing. The Link to Windows app on an iPad still presents a limited, phone-like interface. Even so, for those using an iPhone and Windows PC in tandem, this update will likely be a welcome relief. It’s a solid addition for improving cross-platform usability.
