    OpenJDK Proposal Aims to Cut Java Application Start-Up Times by Saving and Reusing Runtime State

    The OpenJDK community is exploring an innovative approach to enhance Java application startup times with the introduction of a new API aimed at saving and restoring runtime state. This initiative, proposed by Anton Kozlov, a senior software engineer at Azul, is known as the CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) project. The goal is to develop an API that enables Java applications to save their runtime state and quickly restore it, effectively bypassing the traditional lengthy startup and warm-up phases.

    The CRaC proposal outlines several methods for saving the state of a Java application. These methods include virtual machine snapshots, container snapshots, and leveraging the CRIU (Checkpoint/Restore In Userspace) project on Linux. By implementing these mechanisms, the API would allow Java applications to restart more swiftly by reusing the saved state. However, the proposal also acknowledges significant challenges, such as changes in the execution environment after the state has been saved and ensuring that multiple instances started from the same state retain uniqueness and diverge correctly.

    To address these issues, the proposal suggests that Java applications need to be aware of when their state is saved and restored. This awareness would enable applications to manage environmental changes effectively and maintain uniqueness among instances. The CRaC API is envisioned to be versatile enough to accommodate various underlying state-saving mechanisms, and it would include safety checks to ensure that only states that can be reliably restored are saved.

     

     

    The API is expected to be developed under the JEP (JDK Enhancement Proposal) process and integrated into standard Java, although a specific target version has not yet been established. With the feature set for the upcoming JDK 17 already finalized, the CRaC project might align with other ongoing efforts, such as those at Red Hat or Project Leyden, which aim to address similar Java performance issues.

    To facilitate the adoption of the CRaC API, the proposal includes plans for an org.crac compatibility library. This library would enable developers to begin integrating with the CRaC API before it becomes a part of the mainline JDK. On JDK versions that do not support the CRaC API, the org.crac layer would function as a “no-op,” ensuring that developers can start coding against the API without needing to maintain separate versions of their software for different JDK releases.

    Overall, the CRaC project represents a significant step forward in reducing Java application startup times and enhancing performance, with potential benefits extending to various deployment environments and use cases. The development and eventual integration of this API into the Java ecosystem could substantially improve the efficiency and responsiveness of Java applications.
