JetBrains Report Reveals JavaScript’s Continued Dominance, with TypeScript, Rust, and Python Showing Strong Growth
JavaScript remains the most widely used programming language globally, according to the 2024 State of Developer Ecosystem Report by JetBrains. The report highlights that 61% of developers are using JavaScript to build web applications, solidifying its position as the top language in the world. Following closely behind are Python, HTML/CSS, SQL, Java, and TypeScript, with varying levels of usage and growth.
Python continues to be a strong contender, ranking second with 57% of developers using it, while HTML/CSS stands at 51% and SQL at 48%. Java and TypeScript follow with 46% and 37%, respectively. Interestingly, the report notes that while usage of JavaScript has remained stable, Python and TypeScript saw a 3% increase in usage from the previous year, suggesting growing interest and adoption of these languages in development communities.
Although JavaScript still leads the pack, the report highlights that languages like TypeScript, Rust, and Python are experiencing significant growth, which is particularly noteworthy for developers looking to explore new opportunities. Rust, known for its memory safety and performance features, has seen increased adoption, as has TypeScript, which builds on JavaScript’s foundation to offer better type safety and developer tools. This indicates that developers are increasingly seeking languages that offer more robustness and scalability for modern applications.
The report, which was released on December 11, surveyed over 23,000 developers worldwide between May and June 2024. It offers a comprehensive snapshot of the current developer ecosystem, providing valuable insights into language trends, usage patterns, and the evolving landscape of programming tools. As the tech industry continues to evolve, these findings provide crucial data for developers and organizations making strategic decisions about which languages to adopt for future projects.
