JetBrains’ Java Rival and the Leading Language for Android Development Moves Up to 15th Place in Tiobe’s Index of Programming Language Popularity
JetBrains’ Kotlin Language, a Java Rival Endorsed by Google for Android Mobile Development, Continues to Scale Up Tiobe’s Index of Language Popularity
JetBrains’ Kotlin language has steadily climbed Tiobe’s index of language popularity, reaching the 15th spot in the November 2023 rankings. This marks a significant milestone for Kotlin, a Java rival that Google endorses for Android mobile development.
Rising Popularity
After breaking into the top 20 in the Tiobe Index in September with a rating of 0.9%, Kotlin scored a rating of 1.15% this month, moving up from 18th place last month. This upward trend highlights Kotlin’s growing influence and adoption among developers.
Advantages and Endorsements
Tiobe, a software quality services company, attributes Kotlin’s rise to its interoperability with Java and its unmatched accommodations for Android development. Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen noted that Kotlin aligns well with modern programming practices, featuring expressive syntax, a strong type system, and built-in mechanisms to avoid null pointer exceptions.
Future Potential
“Based on my experience, I am pretty sure Kotlin can reach a top 10 position,” Jansen said. However, he added that it remains uncertain whether Kotlin can ascend to a top four slot in the rankings.
Tiobe Index Methodology
The Tiobe Index evaluates language popularity based on the number of skilled engineers, available courses, and third-party vendors for each language. It gathers data from major search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo to compile its rankings.
