Microsoft has partnered with the AFL-CIO to explore how workers’ needs can be taken into account when developing and implementing AI technology.
In this partnership, Microsoft and the AFL-CIO have joined forces to establish a transformative alliance focused on empowering workers through AI education and ensuring their meaningful participation in shaping the trajectory of technology. The collaboration seeks to bridge the gap between technology development and the workforce, emphasizing inclusivity, education, and the empowerment of workers in an era of rapid technological advancement.
The partnership has three objectives. Firstly, Microsoft will provide formal learning opportunities for labor leaders, workers, and students to share detailed information about AI developments. Additionally, Microsoft will collaborate with the American Federation of Teachers to organize workshops that will help students prepare for careers in the technology sector.
Secondly, the partnership aims to incorporate the perspectives and expertise of workers in the development of AI technology. Gathering feedback from workers will enable Microsoft to create worker-centered technology with a focus on unions in key industries.
Finally, the partnership seeks to shape public policies that support technology skills development and the needs of frontline workers. The organizations will advocate for funding in education and support the expansion of registered apprenticeships.
“By working directly with labour leaders, we can help ensure that AI serves the country’s workers,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft. “This groundbreaking partnership honours the rights of workers, learns from the advice of labour leaders as we develop technology and helps us provide people with the skills that will become essential in a new AI era.”
