Microsoft and G42 Announce $1 Billion Digital Investment Initiative in Kenya
Comprehensive Package to Enhance Kenya’s Digital Infrastructure and Innovation
Microsoft, in collaboration with Emirati artificial intelligence organization G42, is set to deliver a $1 billion investment in Kenya. This initiative, in partnership with the Republic of Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, aims to revolutionize the country’s digital landscape.
A significant focus of this investment is the construction of a new green data center by G42 and its partners. This center will support Microsoft Azure operations within a newly established East Africa cloud region. Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, highlighted the importance of this venture: “This partnership between two companies and three countries highlights a real opportunity to bring digital technology to the global south in a safe and secure manner. This represents the single largest and broadest digital investment in Kenya’s history and reflects our confidence in the country, the government, its people, and the future of East Africa.”
Key Pillars of the Initiative
The initiative is built on four main pillars to be developed in collaboration with local partners. The first pillar involves G42’s efforts to train an open-source large language AI model in both Swahili and English, catering to Kenya’s unique cultural and linguistic context. Building on this, Microsoft and G42 will enhance their support for local universities. For example, the Microsoft AI for Good Lab in Nairobi will leverage AI technology to collaborate with nonprofit organizations, addressing economic and societal challenges across East Africa.
The second pillar focuses on various educational and training programs. Microsoft and G42 will partner with local entities to offer a range of programs for Kenyans. These include a digital and AI skilling program for government employees, a cybersecurity skilling initiative, and a business course for young entrepreneurs aged 18-24.
Expanding Internet Connectivity and Cloud Services
A critical aspect of the initiative is expanding internet connectivity across Kenya. Microsoft and G42 will work with Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy to extend wireless internet access to 20 million Kenyans and 50 million people across East Africa by the end of 2025.
Lastly, Microsoft and G42 will collaborate with the Kenyan government to design and operate the new East Africa cloud region, ensuring it meets global standards for digital safety, privacy, and security. The new data center and cloud services will support governmental and citizen services, with government support to aid state-owned enterprises and local entities in migrating their data services to the cloud.
