In a significant move to enhance its European cloud capabilities, Microsoft has inaugurated its first ‘cloud region’ in Spain. This development is part of a substantial $2.1 billion investment aimed at bolstering Spain’s digital infrastructure.
The newly established ‘Spain Central’ cloud region includes several data centers strategically located in Madrid. These centers are designed to provide advanced artificial intelligence and public cloud services with high levels of availability, scalability, and security to businesses and public sector entities across Europe.
“Microsoft’s investment in Spain’s data center infrastructure is a cornerstone of our broader European AI strategy,” stated Jean-Philippe Courtois, Executive Vice President and President of National Transformation Partnerships at Microsoft, in a company press release. “As Spanish businesses continue to integrate into the global economy and export their products and services internationally, this new cloud region will be instrumental in driving economic growth. It will empower companies, governments, and regulated industries to leverage the power of the cloud and AI, thereby accelerating their digital transformation.”
To support the transition to this new cloud infrastructure, ten leading technology partners have joined the Microsoft Cloud Region Strategic Partner Program. These partners include Accenture, Capgemini, DXC Technology, Fujitsu, Minsait, KPMG, Kyndryl, NTT Data, Seidor, and Telefónica Tech. This collaborative effort is aimed at facilitating the digital transformation of Spanish organizations and assisting them in migrating their operations to the new cloud region.
Miguel López-Valverde, the Councillor for Digitalisation for the Community of Madrid, highlighted the significance of this investment. “The ongoing investment by a major corporation like Microsoft underscores the conducive environment we have fostered in the region for attracting talent, investments, and opportunities,” he remarked. “Our regional government is deeply committed to digitalization, and with the support of leading innovative multinationals like Microsoft, we are reinforcing the Community of Madrid’s position as a technological leader on both national and international stages.”
Microsoft’s new cloud region is set to play a pivotal role in Spain’s digital future, providing critical infrastructure that will enable a wide range of industries to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. This move not only supports local economic growth but also strengthens Spain’s position as a key player in the global digital economy.
