Nest Protect Finally Moves to Google Home App in Public Preview
After years of waiting, Google Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are finally being integrated into the Google Home app. As Google officially rolls out public preview support, users will now be able to control their detectors through the Google Home interface, a transition that has been in the works since 2020.
For now, this feature is Android-only and available through the public preview program, allowing users to receive alerts for smoke and carbon monoxide, check battery life updates, and make adjustments to schedules and settings directly from the app. The inclusion of Nest Protect in the Google Home app marks a major shift, especially for long-time users who have had to juggle between the older Nest app and the newer Google Home app for managing their devices.
The Nest Protect model, which first launched in 2013, is the oldest product still available in the Google store, and it’s great to see it being brought into the fold alongside newer Nest devices. Though its second-generation version was released back in 2015, its persistence in the market is a testament to its effectiveness.
The update also brings Matter smart lock compatibility to the Google Home app, which could signal further advancements in Google’s smart home ecosystem, especially after CES 2025. As Nest Protect finally transitions into Google Home, users can expect more streamlined control and management of all their Google Nest devices in one place.
