Google has set the stage for its Pixel 9 launch event on August 13, starting at 10 a.m. PT. The highlight of the event will be the introduction of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the latest in Google’s foldable smartphone lineup. Although specifics on how this model will advance beyond the original Pixel Fold are still under wraps, the addition of “Pro” suggests significant upgrades.
The announcement came through a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), which included a quirky word search related to reasons to switch phones. The event invite focused on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, confirming ongoing rumors of an upgraded foldable model that should enhance the features of the previous Pixel Fold launched in mid-2023.
Interestingly, the standard Pixel 9 wasn’t directly mentioned, which might mean that Google plans to highlight the Pro models first or simply create a buzz around their flagship device. Teaser images reveal a new design for the Pixel 9 series, moving away from the Pixel 6’s back-spanning camera “visor” to a more streamlined pill-shaped camera block. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will have a similar design with four cameras arranged in two rows.
The Pixel 9 Pro also features a design change with flat sides, a shift from the previous rounded edges, aligning more with recent iPhone styles. Although the Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems to mirror this design, its cover screen displays a more pronounced curve, offering a distinct look compared to the original Pixel Fold.
Expect more details and possible additional device announcements as Google continues to build anticipation for the August 13 launch event.
