New Microsoft Security Updates Disrupt Office 2016: What’s Going Wrong?
Microsoft’s recent round of security updates, including KB5055523 for Windows 11 24H2 and KB5055518 for Windows 10, brought essential patches to fix vulnerabilities. However, they also appear to have caused some issues for users of older software, particularly Office 2016.
Windows Latest reports that after installing the KB5002700 update for Office 2016, users are encountering crashes in several Office apps. Word and Excel crash when attempting to create new documents, while Outlook fails to load the calendar view, resulting in a crash. These issues have been shared widely on Reddit, but Microsoft has yet to address them on the support page for the update.
Given that Office 2016 is now almost a decade old, it’s unclear whether Microsoft will prioritize fixing these bugs. If you’re impacted by these crashes, you may need to wait for a future patch, or consider upgrading to Office 2024 or subscribing to Microsoft 365.
