Just four days have passed since God of War Ragnarök launched on PC, and already the modding community is making headlines. Among their early efforts is a mod that effectively strips the game of its Sony software hooks, particularly the contentious requirement for a PlayStation Network (PSN) login.
This login requirement, while expected for a Sony title, has become a hot-button issue since it was recently enforced in Helldivers 2. Although that game later removed the login stipulation, Sony has maintained this practice for its subsequent PC releases, leaving many gamers unhappy.
Despite Ragnarök receiving an overall positive response and demonstrating impressive performance, it currently carries a “Mixed” review rating on Steam, primarily due to complaints about the mandatory PSN login. In response to these grievances, a modder has shared a user-friendly patch on NexusMods, which eliminates the PlayStation PC SDK runtime requirement. The installation is remarkably easy: users just need to copy two .DLL files into the game folder. When the game prompts for a connection to a PSN account, players can simply decline and enjoy the game without interruption.
On one hand, it’s understandable why Sony might require an account for its PC games, as their goal is to broaden the PlayStation ecosystem and engage more users with their platform. Many titles on Steam also impose secondary logins, which can be inconvenient. However, given that God of War is a single-player experience focused on narrative, the necessity of a PSN login becomes questionable. It seems that the only advantage for Sony is the collection of user data for analytics and marketing, with minimal benefits for players. While some may argue that the resulting review bombing campaign is immature, it reflects a broader frustration with the imposition of unnecessary login requirements in an otherwise immersive single-player game.
