Ryzen 9000 Gains Speed Upgrade on Windows 11

AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series processors initially appeared poised to set a new performance standard, with early benchmark results suggesting impressive gains over the previous Ryzen 7000 lineup. However, as reviews and feedback from first-wave buyers emerged, the reality seemed far less compelling. Disappointed users and reviewers alike noted only minor improvements, leading to questions about AMD’s testing methods. The cause, as it turns out, lay in AMD’s use of Super Admin mode on Windows during their tests. This specialized configuration allowed the processors to achieve their peak performance by tapping into advanced features like expanded branch prediction, which normal user accounts cannot access due to potential security issues.

In a candid interview on The Full Nerd podcast, an AMD representative disclosed that the company was initially puzzled by the discrepancy between its own tests and the lukewarm early reviews. After some digging, AMD realized that Windows’ Super Admin settings had granted extra privileges, allowing the Ryzen 9000 CPUs to leverage their full capabilities. This revelation led to Microsoft including an adjustment in a Windows 11 24H2 preview build, which enabled these processors to reach their performance potential without requiring Super Admin access. Initial testing of this preview build revealed the genuine power of the Ryzen 9000 series.

Now, these performance enhancements have been rolled out to all users with the latest update to Windows 11 23H2. Microsoft confirmed that Build 22621.4112 or 22631.4112 includes the necessary changes to let Ryzen 9000 users enjoy the benefits that AMD had initially advertised. For those who have invested in the Ryzen 9000 lineup, the update is a must. With this new build, Ryzen 9000 users can experience the processor’s full potential, delivering a marked improvement in performance on benchmarking tools and resource-intensive applications alike. It’s a win for users who can now tap into these CPUs’ capabilities without compromising on security by using an administrator account.
