Transitioning to Windows 11 has been a tough sell for many PC users, especially gamers. However, the latest Steam survey indicates a breakthrough: Windows 11 now leads over Windows 10 in Steam’s user base, with 49.17 percent using Windows 11 compared to 47.09 percent on Windows 10 as of August 2024.
This shift is noteworthy for Microsoft, marking a significant achievement in its push for Windows 11. While it’s unclear whether this increase is due to users upgrading from older systems or buying new PCs with Windows 11, it’s evident that Windows 11 has taken nearly three years to reach this milestone, whereas Windows 10 achieved it in less than a year.
Looking ahead, with Windows 10’s end-of-service approaching in just over a year, its usage is expected to decline gradually, much like the slow phase-out of Windows 8 (0.07 percent) and Windows 7 (0.37 percent). Unlike Windows 10’s transition from an unpopular predecessor, Windows 11 is contending with a more established Windows 10 user base.
Microsoft is keen to boost Windows 11 adoption, and upcoming updates that enhance performance on the latest hardware could be key to accelerating this transition.
