Microsoft Resolves USB Scanner Issue, Lifts Block on Windows 11 24H2 Update
In a major update for Windows 11 users, Microsoft has lifted the block on the Windows 11 24H2 update for PCs that were previously incompatible due to issues with USB scanners and other eSCL-supported devices. This block had been in place for months after it was discovered that devices using the eSCL protocol, such as scanners, multifunction printers, and modems, were no longer functioning properly following the update to 24H2. These devices would not switch to USB mode, rendering them unusable.
Microsoft’s response involved pausing the update for affected systems and advising users not to manually install 24H2. However, with the release of the cumulative update KB5048667 on December 10, 2024, the company has resolved the issue. This update includes fixes for the scanning and device recognition problem, allowing users to finally update their PCs to 24H2.
The safeguard hold has now been lifted, and users with previously blocked devices will be offered the 24H2 update over the next few days. Restarting your PC after installing the cumulative update can expedite the process, ensuring that your device is offered the 24H2 update as soon as possible.
While 2024 has been a challenging year for Microsoft, with several controversies impacting the company, this update offers some relief for Windows 11 users. Alongside the recent decision to allow Windows 11 on older PCs, it appears that Microsoft is taking steps in the right direction to address issues and improve the user experience.
