On-device AI: Apple’s Strategic Move
Tim Cook strongly hinted to analysts during an earnings call last week that his company will be building new AI features into its various operating systems later this year. Apple already uses some machine learning in its phones for photography features, but Cook likely means that Apple has been working on adding generative AI features to its phone OS—perhaps for tasks like generating image captions or crafting text messages.
Apple is unlikely to offer generative AI as a stand-alone app or feature but might very well use the burgeoning technology to improve existing experiences (Siri, for example). Apple is in a very good position to do that, controlling both the OS and the phone. This unique positioning allows Apple to enhance user experiences by giving its AI model access to the device’s sensors, mics, and cameras. The data collected could be used to paint a picture of the user’s world, making the iPhone better at anticipating and suggesting useful information or features.
The Future of AI Models: Learning Like Babies
Researchers are making strides in teaching AI models to learn more like babies. Unlike large language models (LLMs), babies have an innate ability to recognize and label objects in the real world. A team of researchers mounted cameras and microphones on young children, capturing audiovisual data that could train an LLM. The study revealed that AI models can start understanding language faster and more cost-effectively when trained with data that mimics how children see and hear the world.
Surge in AI Lobbying in 2023
OpenSecrets, at the request of CNBC, reported that more than 450 companies lobbied to influence government regulations on AI in 2023—a 185% increase over 2022. Companies spent $957 million on lobbying efforts related to AI, with big names like OpenAI, Tesla, Nvidia, ByteDance (TikTok), and others actively participating. As the government considers regulations for AI development and use, Big Tech firms are concerned about potential impacts on their businesses and have been lobbying to shape these regulations.
These developments reflect the ongoing evolution and challenges in the AI landscape, from on-device advancements to novel approaches in AI learning and the increasing influence of lobbying efforts on AI regulations. Stay tuned for more insights into the dynamic world of artificial intelligence.
