Hyundai is poised to redefine the skies with its cutting-edge electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi, the second-generation S-A2, unveiled by Supernal, the advanced air mobility arm of the Hyundai Group, at CES 2024. Scheduled to take flight in 2028, the S-A2 builds on Hyundai’s expertise in electric vehicles, following its initial foray into air mobility with the Uber Air collaboration and the debut of the Hyundai Urban Air Mobility SA-1 at CES 2020.
The battery-powered S-A2 features a sleek V-tail fuselage, accommodating four passengers, luggage, and a pilot. With eight rotors propelling it skyward during vertical takeoff, the craft seamlessly transitions into a horizontal flight configuration for optimal efficiency. Ideal for urban environments, the eVTOL’s ability to take off from helipads ensures accessibility and convenience, coupled with a reduced noise footprint compared to traditional helicopters.
Positioned as a complement to commercial airlines, the S-A2 targets short-distance travel, bridging the gap between city centers and airports. Boasting a flight range of 25 to 40 miles, a top speed of 120 mph, and a cruising altitude of 1,500 feet, Hyundai’s S-A2 represents a futuristic solution for swift and efficient urban transportation. The modular design not only ensures adaptability to evolving battery technologies but also aligns with Hyundai’s commitment to mass-producing the eVTOL, leveraging advanced manufacturing techniques showcased in its HMGICS Singapore plant.
