NORAD Tracks Santa: A Holiday Tradition Enhanced by AI

For over six decades, the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) has been simulating Santa Claus’ global journey on Christmas Eve, and in 2024, NORAD introduces a new feature: an AI chatbot. Although the AI’s capabilities are limited at the moment, it’s a fun addition to the beloved holiday experience.

The NORAD Tracks Santa site kicked off on December 1, but the official simulation begins at midnight on December 24. Leading up to Christmas, the website offers plenty of holiday entertainment. You can play games, watch videos about Santa, listen to festive songs, and learn more about the traditions surrounding Santa and NORAD. The site even includes an interactive chatbot named Radar, allowing users to engage with the experience.

The real-time tracking event can take on military overtones, as seen in a 2013 video where Santa’s sleigh is referred to as “The Big Red One,” a nod to the 1st Infantry Division of the US Army.

Originally a project by NORAD’s predecessor in 1955, this tradition has continued with the organization’s mission of monitoring North American airspace for early warnings of missile and air threats. From humble beginnings with no internet to today’s high-tech tracking, NORAD’s holiday simulation remains a cherished event for families worldwide.

Check out the NORAD Tracks Santa website and watch the countdown to Christmas Eve. Don’t forget to tune in as Santa begins his sleigh ride around the world!
