Microsoft has officially released the final security update for its Surface Duo 2, marking the end of support for the dual-screen smartphone on October 21, according to a report by Windows Central.
The original Surface Duo, which debuted in September 2020, was Microsoft’s bold entry into the foldable smartphone market. With its dual-screen design and custom Android interface, the device promised to deliver unmatched productivity on the go. However, the Surface Duo struggled with numerous performance issues, software bugs, and a hefty price tag, leading to a lukewarm reception.
Its successor, the Surface Duo 2, launched in October 2021, but despite efforts to improve the hardware and address concerns, it faced similar challenges. The device was plagued by software limitations, which combined with its premium pricing, prevented it from gaining much traction in the competitive smartphone market.
With Microsoft ending support for the Surface Duo 2, the entire Surface Duo line is coming to a close. Like other discontinued Microsoft mobile products such as Windows Phone and Lumia, the Surface Duo series is set to fade into history as the company pivots away from its mobile device ambitions.
