DeepSeek releases 'sparse attention' model that cuts API costs in half | TechCrunch

DeepSeek, As the year drew to a close, the AI research community was presented with a development that could significantly reshape how advanced models are built and scaled.

Researchers at Chinese AI company DeepSeek published a paper describing a technique they call Manifold-Constrained Hyper-Connections (mHC). The approach proposes a more efficient way to train large language models by restructuring how connections are formed during training, potentially reducing the massive computational demands that typically define frontier AI development.

DeepSeek is no stranger to disrupting expectations. The lab gained widespread attention last year with the release of its R1 model, which demonstrated performance comparable to OpenAI’s o1 while reportedly requiring far fewer resources to train. That release challenged the prevailing assumption that only companies with enormous budgets and access to vast computing infrastructure could compete at the cutting edge of AI.

The newly introduced mHC framework may be the missing piece behind DeepSeek’s next-generation efforts. It is widely speculated that the technique could underpin the company’s long-awaited R2 model, which was originally slated for release last year but was delayed.

According to reports, the postponement stemmed from a combination of constrained access to advanced AI hardware in China and internal concerns about model readiness. If mHC delivers on its promise, it could offer DeepSeek — and potentially other developers — a practical path to building powerful AI systems without the traditional barriers of cost and scale.
