Just as I contemplated parting with my lesser-played console games, Hyperkin, the renowned retro game console maker from Los Angeles, introduced an enticing reason to preserve those cherished classics. Their latest endeavor, the ‘Mega 95,’ currently in its prototype stage, has set the retro gaming community abuzz with excitement. This handheld console offers the remarkable ability to play original Sega Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges, presenting a nostalgic journey for fans of these iconic gaming platforms.
Although still in development, the Mega 95 has reignited the desire to face off against Robotnik on the Death Egg in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, reminiscent of my teenage days spent huddled around friends’ consoles. Beyond the trip down memory lane, the Mega 95 distinguishes itself by allowing the direct insertion of original Sega game cartridges into the top of the chassis. It promises dual functionality, allowing gameplay either on the console itself or through connection to any display.
Designed with a classic handheld layout featuring a D-pad on one side and action keys on the other, the Mega 95 delivers a familiar gaming experience. While its controls may not be detachable like the Nintendo Switch, it compensates with a versatile 5-inch screen that seamlessly switches between classic 4:3 and expanded 16:9 aspect ratios at the push of a button. Elevating the gaming experience further, the console’s connectivity surpasses Hyperkin’s previous SupaBoy line, featuring a Type-C display dock that facilitates HD output (720p) to a TV or monitor via an HD cable.
While release dates and pricing details remain undisclosed, Hyperkin’s unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) hints at an imminent launch. The showcased prototype design, evoking memories of the classic Sega Genesis Nomad console, adds to the anticipation. The wait for a retail version might pose a challenge, but it offers an ideal window to explore flea markets and car boot sales in search of vintage Sega cartridges.
