Today at 10 a.m. EST, the Senate Judiciary Committee is convening for a pivotal hearing addressing the failures of Big Tech in safeguarding children from online sexual exploitation. The CEOs of five major tech companies, including Linda Yaccarino of X, Evan Spiegel of Snap, Jason Citron of Discord, Shou Chew of TikTok, and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, will testify on the alarming issue. The hearing serves as a catalyst for a renewed push for federal legislation aimed at mitigating the perceived harms of social media on children.

U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, emphasized the bipartisan commitment to combatting online dangers for children. Durbin stated on the Senate floor, “This continues our Committee’s bipartisan work to combat the dangers children face online. This has been one of my top priorities as chair of the committee. I look forward to hearing from these companies about what they’re doing to make their platforms inaccessible to child sex offenders.”

Opening statements preview key focuses of the testimony. Evan Spiegel of Snap will discuss ongoing efforts to eliminate content such as extortion, child sexual abuse material, and illegal drugs from their platform. Mark Zuckerberg is expected to address the need for more reliable age verification and enhanced parental controls, acknowledging the responsibility of platforms to ensure a safer online environment for young users. Shou Chew of TikTok has pledged $2 million in 2024 towards bolstering user protection, particularly for children.
