Google Releases Emergency Chrome Update to Fix Actively Exploited Vulnerability
Google has released Chrome version 134.0.6998.177/178 for Windows, addressing a serious security vulnerability that is already being exploited by cybercriminals. MacOS, Linux, and Android users are still waiting for a patch, as Google has yet to announce updates for those platforms. Meanwhile, other Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi will likely release their own updates soon.
A High-Risk Mojo Exploit Discovered by Security Researchers
Google identified the patched vulnerability as CVE-2025-2783, a critical flaw in Mojo, which serves as the inter-process communication library within Chrome. The vulnerability was discovered by Boris Larin and Igor Kuznetsov from Kaspersky and reported to Google on March 20th. Due to its severity, Google has classified it as high risk.
While specific details about the attack remain unclear, Google has confirmed real-world exploitation of this vulnerability. Since the patch has only been issued for Windows, it suggests that Windows users are currently the main target of these attacks.
Other Chromium-Based Browsers Must React Quickly
Now that Google has patched the flaw in Chrome, other Chromium-based browsers must implement the fix to prevent similar security breaches. Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi are expected to update soon, while Opera remains outdated, still running on Chromium version 132.
Keeping Your Browser and System Secure
For Chrome users, updates typically install automatically, but it’s best to manually check for the latest version via Help > About Google Chrome to ensure protection. Google has also announced that Chrome 135 will be released next week, bringing additional security enhancements.
This situation highlights the ongoing risk of cyber threats, where attackers exploit vulnerabilities before patches are available. Beyond browser updates, antivirus software remains a critical defense against such exploits. Users should consider investing in strong security tools to add an extra layer of protection against potential attacks.
