Disabling App Recommendations in Windows 11 Start Menu

Windows 11 has introduced an unwelcome feature for many users: the display of ads for promoted apps and services right in the Start menu. These suggestions, often pulled from the Microsoft Store, can feel intrusive and detract from the streamlined experience that many users prefer. Thankfully, there’s a way to turn them off and regain a clutter-free Start menu.

To disable these ads, start by opening the Start menu and searching for “Settings.” Once you’ve accessed the Settings menu, navigate to “Personalization” on the left-hand side. Scroll down until you find the “Start” option, and click on it. Here, you’ll see a setting labeled “Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more.” Simply toggle this setting to “Off,” and those promoted app ads will disappear from your Start menu.

Microsoft began rolling out these Start menu ads to the general Windows 11 user base back in April, and more recently, they’ve started appearing in Windows 10 as well. This suggests that Microsoft is committed to pushing this advertising strategy across its operating systems, likely hoping to encourage users to explore and purchase apps and services, such as Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

While it’s understandable that Microsoft wants to leverage high-visibility areas like the Start menu to promote its offerings, the constant presence of ads can be irritating. Fortunately, the option to opt out provides a way to maintain a cleaner, more personalized Start menu, allowing you to avoid unnecessary distractions.
