Great news! Setting up a virtual PC to test Linux or other Windows versions no longer requires spending hundreds of dollars. VMware Workstation Pro, once priced at around $250, is now free for private use.
You can download the software from the Broadcom website, though locating the download can be a bit tricky. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to download and install VMware Workstation Pro.
Downloading VMware Workstation Pro
To start, you need to create a user account on the Broadcom support portal. Visit the portal and click “Register.”
You’ll need to provide an email address and solve a captcha, after which you’ll receive a confirmation code via email. Return to the Broadcom website, enter the code, and complete the registration by filling in your name, country of residence, and a secure password.
Note: You’ll be prompted to expand your profile under “Build Your Profile” to access all areas and programs. This step is unnecessary if you only intend to download and use VMware for private purposes.
If Broadcom requests a “Side ID,” remember that this is only applicable if you have a commercial contract. For private use, you don’t need one.
Head to the Broadcom download area for VMware Workstation Pro. You may need to re-enter your login details.
Look for VMware Workstation Pro 17.0 for Personal Use (Windows) (or Linux if needed) and click the blue link for the latest version release. This should begin the direct download of a file like VMware-workstation-full-17.5.2-23775571.exe. You may also need to verify your data and accept the terms of use if you’re using a new account.
Note: If you see “Screening required” above the download button, it means your account might still need to be verified by Broadcom. Reload the page or try logging in later, and make sure you’ve agreed to the terms and conditions. This workaround worked for us after a few attempts.
Installing VMware Workstation Pro
The installation process for VMware Workstation Pro is simple. Run the downloaded EXE file and click “Next” until you reach the license agreement.
When prompted, select “Install Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHP) automatically” and proceed with “Next.” You can keep the default installation folder and skip the optional keyboard driver.
In the User Experience Settings window, you can uncheck the options if you don’t want to share usage data with the manufacturer. Continue the installation and finally confirm with “Install” and “Finish.”
Congratulations, you’re ready to use VMware Workstation Pro!
