The New Wave of PDFs: Doom Running in Your Document
It turns out PDFs, once considered only a format for static documents, are being transformed into something much more dynamic. Originally introduced in 1992, PDF (Portable Document Format) was designed for consistency across systems. However, the format’s complexity is attracting both developers and hackers looking to explore its limits.
A prime example of this innovation is DoomPDF, created by ading2210, a high school student interested in programming, web development, and cybersecurity. DoomPDF is a port of Doom that runs right inside a PDF file, but with a catch: you need a PDF reader that supports JavaScript (like Adobe Acrobat or browsers like Chromium) to play.
Inspired by PDFtris (created by Thomas Rinsma), DoomPDF is pushing the PDF format into uncharted territory. This leap into interactive PDFs showcases the potential for the format to become much more than a traditional document presentation tool.
