Leverage the Free Open-Source FastEndpoints Library for Building Fast and Efficient APIs in ASP.NET Core

FastEndpoints is an innovative, free, and open-source framework designed to streamline REST API development in .NET Core. It offers a compelling alternative for building fast and lightweight APIs, addressing some of the limitations of ASP.NET Core’s built-in options. This article will delve into the FastEndpoints library and demonstrate how to utilize it to create efficient APIs in your ASP.NET Core applications.

ASP.NET Core provides two primary methods for API development: traditional controllers and minimal APIs. Traditional controllers, such as MVC and API controllers, offer a comprehensive feature set but often require substantial boilerplate code. While they are powerful, they fall short in performance compared to minimal APIs. On the other hand, minimal APIs are designed to be lightweight and fast, yet they come with a limited feature set that may not meet all needs.

FastEndpoints presents a third option, blending the strengths of both traditional controllers and minimal APIs. Although minimal APIs have a slight edge in speed, FastEndpoints compensates by offering additional features that minimal APIs lack. These include model binding, rate limiting, and caching. Furthermore, FastEndpoints integrates seamlessly with Swagger or OpenAPI, making it easier to document your APIs effectively.

The FastEndpoints framework adheres to the REPR (Request-Endpoint-Response) design pattern, which emphasizes simplicity and clarity in API development. This pattern organizes APIs around endpoints rather than controllers, providing a clear separation between the request, the endpoint logic, and the response. This modular approach not only simplifies development but also enhances maintainability and readability.

In the following sections, we will explore how to implement FastEndpoints in an ASP.NET Core project. We will walk through creating an endpoint class, a request DTO (Data Transfer Object) class, and a response DTO class. This practical example will showcase how FastEndpoints can be leveraged to build efficient, feature-rich APIs that balance performance and functionality.

By the end of this guide, you will have a solid understanding of how to use FastEndpoints to enhance your API development process, enabling you to build APIs that are both fast and capable of handling complex requirements efficiently.
