Instagram Unveils Groundbreaking GenAI-Powered Background Editing Tool

Instagram introduced its productive AI-powered background editing tool to US-based users on Wednesday.

Meta’s productive artificial intelligence leader Ahmad Al-Dahle said in his post on Threads that the tool will allow users to change the background of their images through redirects for Stories.

When users tap an image’s background editor icon, they’ll get canned alerts like “On the red carpet,” “Chased by dinosaurs,” and “Surrounded by puppies.” Users can also write their own prompts to change the background.

When a user posts a Story with a newly created background, others will also see a “Try It” sticker with a prompt so they can play with the rendering tool.
Earlier this week, Snapchat released a new tool that allows paying users to create and send AI-generated images. In August, the company introduced a new feature called Dreams, which allows users to create fantasy images with different themes. Earlier this year, the social network rolled out the ability to fill prompt-based backgrounds for Snapchat+ users.

Earlier in the month, Meta rolled out 28 AI-powered sprites for US-based users across all its apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram), with Bing search support and a better context window. The company also launched a standalone AI image generator called Imagine with Meta, powered by its own model called Emu.
