JetBrains’ Kotlin, the Top Choice for Android Development, Advances to 15th Place in TIOBE Index
Kotlin’s Ascension in the TIOBE Index: A Look at Its Growing Popularity
JetBrains’ Kotlin, a formidable contender to Java and a favored language for Android mobile development, has seen a significant rise in the TIOBE Index, reaching 15th place in the November 2023 rankings. This marks a notable advancement from its previous position in the top 20.
Kotlin first made waves in the Tiobe Index in September, securing a spot with a rating of 0.9%. This month, the language has improved its standing, achieving a rating of 1.15%. Just last month, Kotlin was positioned at 18th place, highlighting its steady upward trajectory.
According to Tiobe, Kotlin’s growth is attributed to its seamless interoperability with Java and its exceptional suitability for Android development. Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen emphasizes that Kotlin aligns well with contemporary programming trends, favoring expressive languages that boast a robust type system and design considerations to prevent null pointer exceptions.
Jansen is optimistic about Kotlin’s future, suggesting that the language has the potential to break into the top 10 of the index. However, he notes that reaching the top four remains a challenging prospect.
The TIOBE Index evaluates programming languages based on several factors, including the number of skilled engineers, available courses, and third-party vendors worldwide. It aggregates data from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo to determine each language’s popularity.
In contrast, the Pypl Popularity of Programming Languages Index ranks Kotlin 13th this month with a 1.76% share, although it has experienced a slight decline compared to the previous year. Pypl’s ranking methodology focuses on the frequency of language-related searches on Google, offering a different perspective on language popularity.
