Generative AI Revolutionizes Application Development and Operations at Oracle, Says CTO Ellison

At the recent Oracle CloudWorld conference in Las Vegas, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Larry Ellison unveiled the company’s ambitious vision for the future of application development powered by generative AI. During his presentation, he articulated the transformative potential of this technology, emphasizing that new applications at Oracle will increasingly be created by AI rather than through traditional coding methods. Ellison’s assertion that generative AI might be “the most important technology ever” highlights the profound impact he believes it will have on the industry.

Ellison described generative AI as a revolutionary breakthrough, fundamentally changing the landscape of how applications are built and operated at Oracle. He pointed out that this shift will alter the roles of developers, stating, “We’re not going to be writing new applications anymore in Java. Not new ones.” While Java will still be used for existing applications, the emphasis will now be on using AI for code generation. This approach not only streamlines the development process but also enhances the speed and efficiency with which new projects can be initiated.

One of the key tools Oracle is leveraging for this transformation is Oracle APEX, its enterprise low-code and no-code application development platform. Ellison highlighted that APEX allows teams to generate applications more rapidly and with fewer resources. By simplifying the development process, Oracle aims to empower smaller teams to create powerful applications without the overhead of traditional coding practices. This shift toward low-code development signifies a broader trend in the tech industry, where speed and agility are becoming increasingly crucial.

The benefits of using APEX extend beyond speed; Ellison emphasized improved security and reliability as well. With generative AI in the development loop, Oracle claims that applications will be more secure, with a reduced likelihood of security bugs. This focus on reliability is underscored by the platform’s ability to generate stateless applications that automatically handle failover scenarios, ensuring consistent performance and uptime.

Ellison’s vision for the future aligns with a growing recognition of the potential for AI to reshape various aspects of technology and business. As generative AI tools become more advanced, the expectation is that they will not only enhance the development process but also enable organizations to respond more swiftly to changing market demands. This adaptability could provide Oracle with a competitive edge as businesses increasingly seek efficient and innovative solutions.

In summary, Larry Ellison’s insights at Oracle CloudWorld illuminate a pivotal moment in application development. The integration of generative AI into the development process marks a significant departure from traditional methods, promising to revolutionize how Oracle and its partners create and manage software applications. As this technology continues to evolve, it could set new standards for efficiency, security, and overall performance in the tech industry.
