The Portege Returns—Dynabook Brings Back a Consumer Laptop With a Twist
After a ten-year hiatus, the Portege laptop has returned to the consumer market, and this time, it brings a feature that’s increasingly rare—a user-replaceable battery.
Dynabook, formerly Toshiba’s PC division before being acquired by Sharp, has introduced the Portege Z40L-N, a $1,699 premium business laptop powered by Intel’s Core Ultra Series 2 processors. Unlike previous Portege models that were limited to commercial customers, this new release is now available for direct consumer purchase on Dynabook’s website. Buyers can choose from fixed EZ-Buy configurations or custom-built models with various hardware options.
Housed in a lightweight yet durable magnesium chassis, the Portege Z40L-N is designed for professionals who need portability and performance. It features a 14-inch 1920×1200 display, with processing power ranging from Intel’s Core Ultra 5 226V to the Core Ultra 7 268V with vPro. Memory configurations include 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM, while storage options go up to 2TB. The 65Wh battery, which Dynabook explicitly describes as user-replaceable, could offer a significant advantage for those looking to extend the lifespan of their device. However, it remains unclear whether replacement batteries will be available directly from Dynabook’s store.
For connectivity, the Portege Z40L-N comes with two Thunderbolt ports, ensuring high-speed data transfers and support for various accessories and docks, which Dynabook will also sell separately.
Buyers of the preconfigured EZ-Buy models will receive a three-year warranty, while Built-to-Order customers will get an extended four-year warranty. With the Portege series returning to consumers, Dynabook is bringing back high-end business laptops with a focus on longevity and practicality—a rare find in today’s market.
