Posit Parts Ways with R Markdown and knitr Creator Yihui Xie

Yihui Xie, the creator behind R Markdown and knitr, will transition to a part-time contractor role with Posit, focusing on maintaining his popular R packages.

Yihui Xie, a notable figure in the R programming community, has recently been laid off from Posit, the company formerly known as RStudio, where he worked as a full-time software developer. Xie is renowned for creating influential R packages such as R Markdown, knitr, blogdown, and bookdown. The layoff, which occurred at the end of December 2023, was announced by Xie himself in a recent blog post. Despite the change, he will continue to work with Posit on a part-time basis to maintain some of his key packages.

In his blog post, Xie expressed surprise at the layoff but quickly came to terms with the decision. “I was quite surprised but only for a short moment,” he wrote. “I fully respected Posit’s decision and quickly accepted the conclusion that my contribution no longer deserved a full-time job here.” His statement reflects a professional acceptance of the company’s strategic shift.

The news has resonated deeply within the R community, sparking an outpouring of support and disbelief from users. Zhian N. Kamvar, a research software engineer, shared his sentiments on Mastodon, describing the news as “absolutely devastating” and highlighting the significant impact Xie’s work has had. “If you’ve ever encountered a website, report, or book built with RStats in recent memory, you have Yihui to thank,” Kamvar noted. This sentiment underscores the critical role Xie’s contributions have played in the R ecosystem.

Xie’s departure is notable not only for his individual contributions but also as a reflection of broader strategic changes at Posit. The company is increasingly focusing on tools that bridge R and Python, exemplified by the launch of Quarto in 2022. Quarto is an open-source technical publishing platform that supports R, Python, Julia, and Observable JavaScript, highlighting Posit’s shift toward language-agnostic solutions.

As of the latest update, Xie has accumulated over 150 GitHub sponsors, demonstrating continued support from the community. Among his sponsors are users who have directly benefited from his packages, such as those who used his bookdown package for writing and publishing. This support illustrates the strong appreciation for Xie’s work and the ongoing demand for his contributions to the R programming ecosystem.

In conclusion, while Yihui Xie’s full-time role at Posit has ended, his legacy through his packages and continued work as a contractor will likely have lasting effects on the R community and beyond. The shift at Posit marks a significant moment for the company and highlights the evolving landscape of tools and technologies in the programming world.
