With only a few weeks to go in 2023, job losses from layoffs continue to mount, meaning the year is going to go out how it began. According to layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi, 1,157 tech companies have now laid off 257,778 workers over the course of the year. As for December, the most prominent companies that have laid off employees include:
ETSY
Etsy is the latest tech company to announce layoffs. CEO Josh Silverman informed employees on 13 December that the company would cut 225 jobs, or about 11% of its workforce. Silverman cited a “very challenging macro and competitive environment” and the need to cut costs.
SPOTIFY
On 4 December, one of the biggest names in streaming announced a massive wave of layoffs. Spotify said it would lay off a further 1,500 staff, around 17 per cent of its total staff. CEO Daniel Ek cited slowing economic growth as the reason for the cuts.
TIDAL
Tidal announced on 6 December that it would cut around 40 people from its workforce, which Bloomberg said accounted for around 10% of the company’s total staff. Tidal’s layoffs come after Tidal’s owner Block (owned by Jack Dorsey) announced in November that the company plans to grow from 13,000 employees in 2023 to a maximum of 12,000 by the end of 2024.
ZULILY
Online shopping site Zulily will reportedly close, and with it more than 800 jobs, according to Retail Dive.
COURSE HERO
It laid off more than 20 employees this month, according to a post the company published on LinkedIn. No reason was given for the layoffs, but it follows cuts at the company in March, when 42 people were laid off, which TechCrunch said equated to 15% of its staff at the time.
TWILIO
Digital communications company Twilio has announced its second round of layoffs this year. According to CNBC, the company announced in early December that it would lay off about 300 employees, or 5% of its total workforce. The December layoffs followed Twilio’s 17% reduction in its workforce in February, when the company laid off about 1,500 employees.
