In a unique demonstration at CES 2024, Xing Mobility, a Taiwanese battery company, showcased a partially blown-up battery pack, capturing attention for its unconventional approach to safety and resilience in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The company’s technology was put to the test with a three-needle examination, where three nails punctured cells within the battery pack, resulting in controlled explosions. Noteworthy was the rapid containment of these explosions, with temperatures soaring to 1,400 degrees Celsius (2,550 degrees Fahrenheit) and returning to normal within a mere 30 seconds – a testament to the efficacy of Xing Mobility’s immersion cooling technology.

Xing Mobility’s battery innovation extends beyond safety concerns, aiming to revolutionize the EV landscape with lighter, safer, and longer-lasting battery packs. Originally delving into the development of an electric race car, the company identified parallels between race car design and the rugged demands placed on specialized vehicles such as tractors. Collaborating with manufacturers, Xing Mobility is actively working to integrate its immersion cooling technology into trucks and tractors. Beyond its safety features, the technology offers additional benefits, including reducing temperature fluctuations during battery cycles, potentially extending battery lifespan and preserving capacity over time. As the company undergoes extensive long-term testing to validate the technology, early results indicate promising outcomes. The immersion cooling tech not only enhances safety but also allows for more compact and lighter battery designs, providing versatility in cell arrangement, even allowing direct attachment to a vehicle’s chassis.
