Windows 11 Gains Ground as Windows 10 Faces Steepest Drop Yet
Windows 11 may soon overtake its predecessor as Microsoft’s dominant OS, according to Neowin’s report on the latest Statcounter data. The March 2025 figures show Windows 11 making its largest market share gain in three years, while Windows 10 suffered its sharpest decline to date.
In just one month, Windows 10’s user base shrank by 4.43 percentage points, leaving it with 54.23% market share among Windows users. Meanwhile, Windows 11 surged by 4.53 percentage points, now running on 42.66% of all Windows PCs. While Windows 10 remains in the lead, the acceleration of Windows 11 adoption suggests that the gap could close within the next few months.
One likely reason behind this shift is Microsoft’s ongoing push to move users off Windows 10 before its October 2025 end-of-support deadline. As that date approaches, more users are upgrading to ensure they continue receiving security updates. For those unwilling to upgrade, Microsoft will offer paid extended security updates (ESUs)—but that comes at an additional cost.
If you’re still using Windows 10, now’s the time to consider your options. Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures continued security and feature updates, while sticking with Windows 10 past its support deadline could leave your system vulnerable to security threats. The choice is yours, but the window for free updates is closing fast.
