Microsoft has confirmed that it will be halting feature releases for Windows 11’s test channels for the remainder of 2024, but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t busy behind the scenes. With the new year still a few weeks away, Microsoft is continuing to refine features and make adjustments to the operating system, albeit at a more gradual pace.
One of the most notable updates to the Windows 11 Insider preview is the continued evolution of Snap Layouts, a feature that makes it easy to snap windows into various configurations with a simple keyboard shortcut. In beta update KB5046716, Microsoft has introduced some helpful descriptive text to make Snap Layouts more intuitive, and it appears that the company is experimenting with different wording options to improve the feature’s accessibility. Additionally, users can now activate Snap Layouts more easily by pressing Windows Key + Z, offering a more seamless way to utilize this productivity tool.
In addition to the Snap Layouts improvements, patch KB5046716 brings several other enhancements:
- Taskbar Jump Lists: You now have the ability to share files directly from the taskbar jump lists, streamlining the file-sharing process and reducing the number of steps needed to share documents.
- On-Screen Keyboard Gamepad Layout: A new gamepad layout has been added to the on-screen keyboard, which could be a helpful feature for those who use controllers for gaming or other applications.
- Narrator Features: The Narrator tool has received a boost with new scan mode features, allowing users to skip past links or jump straight to lists, coupled with keyboard shortcuts for better control and navigation.
- Improved Speech Recognition: Microsoft has enhanced the speech-to-text and text-to-speech functionalities, improving both accuracy and usability.
While major feature releases may be off the table for the rest of the year, these smaller but impactful updates signal that Microsoft is still hard at work on refining Windows 11 and preparing for what’s to come in future updates.
