HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision compared: which HDR format should you choose for your TV?

    TCL HDR10

Buying a new TV today almost guarantees you’ll run into HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, and understanding the difference between them can make a real impact on picture quality. While all three fall under the umbrella of HDR, or High Dynamic Range, they don’t process images the same way. The key distinction lies in how each format handles brightness and color information, known as metadata.

HDR10 is the most basic and widely supported HDR format. It uses static metadata, meaning one set of brightness and color instructions is applied to an entire movie or episode. This approach works, but it doesn’t adapt to changing scenes. Bright moments and dark scenes are treated the same way, which can limit how much detail your TV can show, especially if its tone-mapping isn’t particularly strong.

HDR10+ improves on this by introducing dynamic metadata. Instead of relying on a single set of instructions, the TV adjusts brightness and color scene by scene, or even frame by frame. This allows highlights, shadows, and contrast to be better optimized throughout a show or movie. Many modern TVs support HDR10+, making it a common upgrade over standard HDR10.

Dolby Vision takes dynamic HDR a step further with more advanced metadata and stricter performance requirements for TVs. It’s often regarded as the premium HDR option, delivering the most consistent results across different displays. Choosing the best format ultimately depends on what your TV supports and the content you watch, but dynamic HDR formats generally offer the most refined viewing experience.
