Samsung’s new 2TB 990 SSD drops to its lowest price yet

Samsung 990 SSD Sees First Major Discount Amid Ongoing Memory Shortage

Samsung’s newly released 990 SSD has received its first significant discount, dropping from its $530 MSRP to $370 for the 2TB model. The price cut comes less than a month after launch, offering buyers a more affordable entry point as AI-driven memory shortages continue to keep storage prices elevated.

While SSD pricing remains well above historical norms, the current discount makes the drive one of the more attractive high-performance PCIe 4.0 options available.

    Fast PCIe 4.0 Performance

The Samsung 990 is available in 1TB and 2TB capacities, with the current promotion applying to the larger 2TB version.

    Key specifications include:

    • PCIe 4.0 x4 interface
    • Up to 7,250 MB/s sequential read speeds
    • Up to 6,450 MB/s sequential write speeds
    • Up to 1.1 million random write IOPS

Compared to Samsung’s 990 EVO, the new drive offers noticeably higher peak performance, particularly in sequential transfers and random write workloads.

    Designed for Everyday Performance

The SSD installs into any standard M.2 2280 slot and is compatible with both PCIe 4.0 and older PCIe 3.0 systems.

Samsung also highlights its power-efficient design, making it suitable for both desktop PCs and laptops. Compatibility extends to some handheld gaming devices that support M.2 SSD upgrades.

The included Samsung Magician software provides:

    • Firmware updates
    • Performance optimization
    • Drive health monitoring
    • Data migration tools

    One Important Trade-Off

Unlike Samsung’s premium SSD lineup, the new 990 uses QLC NAND flash memory rather than the more durable TLC NAND found in drives like the 990 EVO.

That results in a few compromises:

    • 3-year warranty instead of 5 years
    • Lower endurance for heavy write workloads
    • Reduced sustained write performance once the cache is exhausted

For typical users, these limitations are unlikely to be noticeable during everyday tasks such as gaming, web browsing, office work, or general file storage.

However, professionals who regularly transfer hundreds of gigabytes of data—such as 4K or 8K video editors—may see slower write speeds during prolonged workloads.

    Good Value in Today’s Market

Although $370 remains a substantial investment for a 2TB SSD, the current pricing reflects today’s hardware market, where AI-driven demand for memory and storage components continues to affect consumer electronics.

At its discounted price, the Samsung 990 offers:

    • 2TB capacity
    • High PCIe 4.0 performance
    • Low power consumption
    • Mature management software
    • Broad compatibility

    Who Should Buy It?

The Samsung 990 is a strong choice for users looking for a fast internal SSD for gaming, productivity, software development, or everyday computing.

Users with write-intensive professional workloads should keep in mind the drive’s QLC-based design and shorter warranty. For everyone else, the current discount makes the Samsung 990 a compelling option while SSD prices remain elevated across the market.
